Spotlight on Porto
Located on the banks of the River Douro and with its tempting food and drink scene, characterful cobbled street neighbourhoods and architecture spanning centuries, Porto is a delightful place for a city break all year round. But there is something special about sipping a glass of wine in the sunshine, taking in the view of the Ponte de Dona Maria Pia Bridge in the summer.
As we all know, Porto has a great food and drink scene, and you can’t visit without sampling some of its classic wines so start with a visit to Caves Poças for Port Wine Tasting. With over 100 years of experience, the family-owned winery is known for its distinct flavour and quality. Take your pick of wine-themed experiences, all of which include a guided tour and, of course, a tasting of some fine port and DOC Douro wines.
For food, the riverbank area of Ribeira is full of charming restaurants, some offering magnificent views of Gaia, famous for its Port production, as well as offering views of at least some of the six famous bridges of Porto, and if you are not worried about your waistline then tuck into the famous Francesinha!
The ‘Impressive Monet and Brilliant Klimt’ exhibition is currently on in Porto, where you can see the masterpieces of two art masters like never before at the Immersivus Gallery, located at the heart of Porto's historic district. The award-winning venue was renovated by prize-winning architect Eduardo Souto de Moura in 1993. Located beneath the building is also the permanent exhibition of Porto Legends, a state-of-the-art live show which tells the fascinating history of Porto through projections, visual effects, and holograms. Be sure to check out future events too, as the 200-year-old building provides a home for an ever-changing calendar of exhibitions and events.
