Spotlight on Romania

Rocky mountains, rolling hills, gothic castles, stunning landscapes and maybe the odd vampire make Romania a great alternative destination this summer.

Must-see sights in Brașov include Piata Sfatului, the council square which was rebuilt a few years ago and is one of the most beautiful squares in Romania - a perfect place to grab a bite or a coffee while listening to The Casa Sfatului, a 13th-century building in the middle of the square with a clock tower that still chimes every hour. Catherine’s Gate, part of Brasov’s fortified mediaeval fortress is still remarkably intact with tall turrets and curved walls, while Tampa Mountain is the best place to take in views over the city and that Hollywood-style sign. Brasov’s Biserica Neagra or ‘Black Church’ is the largest Gothic church in Eastern Europe.

In the Crisana region, pretty Oradea is well worth a visit for its Art Nouveau architecture alone. Or would you prefer to drink wine in the alleged birthplace of the world’s most famous vampire?
