Spotlight on Vienna
Magical in the winter, pretty in the spring, Vienna is also a great place to visit in the summer. The capital of Austria is a cultural delight for travellers, combining old and new with its abundance of palaces, galleries, concert halls, parks, and great places to eat. Coffee house culture and of course the ubiquitous river Danube flow through the city.
Vienna also has a lot of outdoor pools and beaches around the city, allowing you to cool down from the heat during the hotter months.
A great city to explore on foot, and for a picturesque stroll, visit the Schönbrunn Park and Garden, with its beautiful and creatively curated flowers. The grounds also have a palace, a zoo and the many other attractions on the grounds meaning that you can make a whole day of it.
If you want to spend some time inside, then be transported back into the glamorous world of the Habsburgs at The Imperial Carriage Museum. Located in Schönbrunn Mews, it contains a collection of more than 60 historical state coaches, sledges, and sedan chairs as well as gowns and paintings. The collection includes the baroque Imperial Coach and a number of other carriages and artefacts.
You can also visit the Museum and Imperial Treasury, where you can dive into two rich cultural highlights from the mighty Austrian Empire. Travel back in time to the opulent heyday of the Austrian Empire, with skip-the-line access to the magnificent Kunsthistorisches Museum and Imperial Treasury.
Looking for something more modern? Then visit the Museum of Modern Art Ludwig Foundation. Eye-catching from the outside, you can’t miss the towering bluestone facade. Inside explore the works of Picasso, Warhol, Lichtenstein and many more with MUMOK’s changing exhibitions.
During the summer, Vienna also hosts numerous outdoor classical concerts so be sure to look these up too, especially as Austria is the birthplace of Mozart!
